How to Clean a Bathtub

Keeping your acrylic bathtub from Aqua Living clean not only maintains aesthetic beauty, but also promotes a more sanitary environment for bathing and relaxation. If your bathtub has jets, regular cleaning can prolong their proper functioning as well.

When to Clean Your Bathtub

Your new bathtub should be cleaned after installation, before its first use, to ensure the removal of any installation materials. This also gives you a chance to inspect for any scratches or gouges.

How often you clean your bathtub and its various components depends on the type of tub you have. Jets, suction covers, airlines and other features require some cleaning maintenance with each use. Jets also need monthly sanitizing. The surface of the tub should be cleaned regularly, perhaps every few days or weekly.

How to Clean Your Bathtub After Installation

Once your bathtub is fully installed and the tools are cleared away, follow these steps before your first use:

  1. Wipe up debris and dust before rinsing or adding any sort of cleaner or moisture. This prevents anything getting into the drain and causing a clog.
  2. Remove large plaster spills with a plastic edge. Do not use anything metal to scrape up plaster as it will scratch the surface.
  3. Remove small spills and spots by rubbing with a soft, damp cloth.
  4. Remove paint and other difficult, non-water-soluble stains with rubbing alcohol, paint thinner or turpentine.
  5. Remove minor scratches that don’t penetrate the surface by lightly sanding with 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper. Then buff the area, first with automotive buffing compound then with automotive paste wax.
  6. Contact your Aqua Living dealer about any major scratches and gouges; these require refinishing.

How to Perform Regular Maintenance Cleaning

Keep your bathtub and its features in pristine condition with regular maintenance cleaning.

Follow these tips for all Signature bathtubs:

  • Avoid using bubble bath or oil-based additives and drain the bathtub after each use.
  • Clean the surface of the bathtub frequently with a soft cloth. Use a solution of mild liquid detergent and warm water. Rinse well after each cleaning.
  • Read all cleaning product labels before using to ensure cleaners state they are safe specifically for acrylic surfaces. Certain cleaners will permanently damage the bathtub surface.
  • Do not use scouring pads, aerosol sprays marketed for sink/bath/tile cleaning, harsh/abrasive chemicals, ammonia-based products (often used for window cleaning) or disinfectant sprays.
  • Never circulate drain cleaner in the bathtub or its components; it will seriously damage the bathtub.

The following instructions are from the manufacturer’s manuals for our major bathtub lines.

Signature Airbath and Signature Bath Luxury Air

Signature Tranquility Air Bath

Every time these bathtubs are used and drained, water gets into the jets and airlines whether the blower is turned on or not. This water must be removed after each tub use.

Once the tub is drained, turn the blower on and let it run for two minutes to fully purge the jets. After the two minutes, turn the blower off.

Signature Tranquility Air Bath

Signature Tranquility Air Bath

As with the other air baths, water gets into this tub’s air lines every time the bathtub is used whether the blower is turned on or not. This water must be removed after each tub use.

Once the tub is drained, turn the blower on and let it run for five minutes to fully purge the jets. After the five minutes, turn the blower off.

Signature Bath Luxury Plus

Signature Bath Luxury Plus

Clean hair and lint from the suction cover after every use and then rinse the bathtub.

This bathtub runs an automatic purge cycle with each use to remove water from the air jets. The cycle begins on its own 15 minutes after the system stops.

During the purge, the blower will run on high speed for two minutes or until no more water is detected. When the water is gone the blower will stop automatically. While the automatic purge cycle runs the buttons on the topside are disabled and the LED displays how many seconds remain in the purge.

Once a month:

  1. Fill the bathtub to above the jets with hot water.
  2. Add an acrylic surface-safe sanitizer following the directions on the sanitizer’s label. Never use hand/dish soap, laundry detergent or any cleaner that creates suds.
  3. Run the pump for 10 minutes, then drain the tub.
  4. Refill the tub, this time with cold water to 2 inches above the jets.
  5. Turn on the jets and allow them to run for 15 minutes, then drain the tub again.
